Maynard Jail

maynard-jail.jpg A point of interest in Maynard is the old concrete jail located behind the Maynard Community Center. A 6Ә10Ҡstructure was erected around 1936 and was in use until 1953. The door of the jail is made Maynard Jail of old wagon rims. The little jail served its purpose for many years, and those who spent a night there, never want to return.  
Maynard Pioneer Museum and Park

pioneer-museum.jpg The log cabin with its natural look is the central attraction at the Maynard Pioneer Museum and Park, but in 1979 it was about to be torn down and destroyed on its original site on Hwy 328 East of Maynard. Then the local citizens had a dream. The cabin was taken apart, Ԭog by logԠnumbered, moved and reconstructed as the Maynard Pioneer Museum on the park grounds located on highway 328 West at Spring St. in Maynard. Every relic in the museum reflects the personal use of our forefathers who lived in this area in the late 1800ӳ and early 1900ӳ. Every year between 5,000 and 8,000 people turn out for a three day festival during "Maynard Pioneer Days".

century-wall.jpg The Century Wall stands in Black River Overlook Park, along the west bank of the Black River, gazing toward the heart of downtown Pocahontas, beckoning those who pass by to stop, to think, to marvel, to enjoy, to celebrate, with 100 Americans, literally "etched in stone," who in the 20th Century, has made a significant contribution to shaping this great nation of ours.

It is in her honor that a group of people who spearheaded and conducted the effort to restore the former St. Mary's Church/Pocahontas Colored School have given the building the name The Eddie Mae Herron Center. She was the teacher for African American children who attended between the years of 1948-1965.

Geneology.jpg Genealogy Room is one of finest genealogy resource centers in the state that dates back to pre- Civil War era. County records are complete, as our courthouse was never destroyed by fire. Marriage records, obituary collection, family files, Star Herald newspapers are on microfiche and there is an abundance of information on Randolph County as well as neighboring counties for those doing general research or researching their family history.  
Governor Thomas S. Drew

drew-memorial.jpg Randolph County produced the only Arkansas Governor to resign while in office due to low pay. Governor Thomas S. Drew was the only governor ever to be elected from Randolph County. While in office, Governor Drew proclaimed December 19, 1841 as the first Thanksgiving Day ever celebrated in Arkansas. He died in 1879 in Texas and in 1923 was moved back to Pocahontas and buried in the Masonic Cemetery.  
Historic Old Randolph County Courthouse

Historic-Courthouse.jpg Historic Randolph County Courthouse is a grand attraction on the square in Pocahontas. Built in 1872 of early Victorian architecture, it still tempts the eye today with its beauty and grandeur. The Historic Courthouse was first used on April 7, 1875 as county officials moved into the new building. Since 1940 it has served in various municipal capacities and today this beautiful building sits in the downtown square, and is home to the Randolph County Chamber of Commerce.  
Meteorite

meteorite.jpg Meteorite...Or is it? This large stone was found in the Black River bottoms in 1859 by A.H. Keith. It was donated to the city of Pocahontas by the Keith family in 1986 in celebration of ArkansasҠ Sesquicentennial. Itӳ now located on the lawn of the Randolph County Courthouse, in Pocahontas.  
Pocahontas Statue
Hwy. Jct. 67, 115 & 90 in Overlook Park

   
pocahontas-statue.jpg Hand crafted in Italy granite, this statue symbolizes Chief Powhatan's daughter, the princess Pocahontas, for whom our town is named. This statue is displayed prominently in Overlook Park along the Black River.

courthouse.jpg The "new" Courthouse was completed in 1941 and the beautiful lawn serves as an ampitheater today for things like band recitals, political gatherings, veterans memorials and recognitions, dance recitals as well as other entertainment and special events.  
Randolph County Heritage Museum

Using both permanent and transitory exhibits, lecture presentations, interactive exhibits, and other informational programs, the museum truly is a living educational forum linking the present day to Randolph County's rich and varied past of firsts.

The Sanitary Barber Shop
On the Square

   
Historic Barber Shop located on the square in Pocahontas. Built in 1894, it has never been anything but a barber shop and has most of the original equipment and fixtures.  
Veteran's Memorial

The new addition to the memorial in 2006 with bronze statues of hero's and honoring those who serve.

Old US Highway 67


   
ԏldԠUS Highway 67 serves as Reynoӳ main street. Also called Biggers-Reyno road for County purposes. Old Highway 67 was commissioned to be built in 1926. A section beginning in Datto, Arkansas, stretching through Reyno, and ending in Biggers, Arkansas is now listed in the National Historic Register.
